The MediaThon: Hack The News!

MediathonHackNewsMAINNews can topple governments, inspire masses to action, make people laugh, or cry. It can change political futures and financial fortunes, inspire fans to their feet, spark intense conversations, connect people in new ways.

On November 3, 2014 we came together to create content, apps, ideas and about the news… how to reach millenials, create a better curated news experience, and how to leverage written media for audio content. Conversations were had, collaborations were productive, and everyone came away energized! Check out the projects below.

 

Projects

The Winners & People’s Choice Award: SpeechWire – Print News for Your Ears. Team Speechwire presented a working app, a commercial and a presentation of the product that converted news text into audio for commuters, exercisers, and other handsfree activity.

Nwsly.com is a working news site aggregating the most popular coverage from multiple news sites for breaking stories.

BLIP is a blogger integration platform business plan to facilitate backlinking and collaboration between bloggers and established news sources.

Follow.me is an influencer-curated news site pitch.

Impression is a news site idea targeting millenials featuring interactive content and social features. Check out the homepage and sample post mockups here.

Post-MediaThon Discussion

At day’s end, at the Pittsburgh “Hack the News” MediaThon co-hosted by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association, we talked about what news is. LOL Cats? The Kardashians. Speaking up front are PNA president Teri Henning, newspaper publisher Tom Northrop and MediaThon founder Dorian Benkoil.

Judges

Teri Henning

Teri Henning

As President of the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association, Teri Henning manages the association’s member services, its for-profit advertising placement subsidiary, MANSI Media, and the PNA Foundation.  In addition to her responsibilities as president, Ms. Henning provides legal advice and lobbying services to Pennsylvania newspapers on matters affecting newspapers, files amicus briefs in court cases significant to Pennsylvania newspapers, and conducts member education seminars. Before joining the association, Ms. Henning taught in the clinical programs at the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University and worked in private practice and government in commercial litigation and environmental law. Teri graduated cum laude from Bucknell University, with a B.A. degree in psychology. She received her J.D. degree, cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center.

Ralph Martin

Ralph Martin

Ralph Martin is President and CEO of Trib Total Media, Western Pennsylvania’s largest source of news and information. Martin joined the company in 2003 as General Manager of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, bringing with him over 20 years of executive managerial
experience spanning over 30 years in his newspaper industry career.  Martin holds several leadership positions in the newspaper industry and
in greater Pittsburgh. He is Past President of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Western Pennsylvania/West Virginia Chapter and
he is on the board of directors for Imani Christian Academy. Martin is also a Trustee of Robert Morris University.

Johnathan Crowe, Creative Director, CivicScience: “Crowe” oversees the look and feel of all CivicScience products. He developed and manages the CivicScience brand, and provides a creative touch to all of our marketing efforts. Crowe has over ten years of experience planning, designing, building, and launching websites and applications.

Dorian Benkoil

Dorian Benkoil Founder

Dorian Benkoil is an accomplished media and technology executive, lecturer and columnist, and co-founder of Teeming Media, a Digital Media Management consultancy. An award-winning journalist, Dorian frequently writes, teaches and speaks publicly on cutting edge media and technology issues. Dorian was a foreign correspondent and reporter at Newsweek, The Associated Press, ABC News and ABCNews.com.
